Meniscal repair

🦵 What Is Meniscal Repair?

The meniscus is a C-shaped piece of cartilage that cushions your knee joint. When it tears (often from a twisting injury), it can cause pain, swelling, or the knee getting stuck. Meniscal repair is a type of knee surgery that aims to stitch a torn meniscus back together instead of removing it.

Unlike trimming (called a meniscectomy), repair preserves the natural tissue, which helps protect the knee joint and reduce the risk of arthritis later on.

🛠️ When Is Meniscal Repair Suitable?

A meniscus repair is usually considered when:

  • The tear is in the outer part of the meniscus (which has a good blood supply and can heal better).

  • The patient is younger or active.

  • The tear is large, and preserving the meniscus would give better long-term outcomes.

🔬 How Is It Done?

  • Performed through keyhole (arthroscopic) surgery.

  • Small instruments and a camera are inserted into the knee.

  • Tiny stitches or special anchors are inserted to hold the torn pieces together.

  • The area is then allowed to heal over time.

🕒 Recovery After Meniscal Repair

  • Slower than trimming, because the tissue needs time to heal.

  • Often involves:

    • Wearing a brace to limit movement.

    • Using crutches for a few weeks to avoid putting weight on the knee.

    • A structured physiotherapy program to restore strength and mobility.

Full recovery usually takes 3 to 6 months, depending on the tear and individual factors.

🎯 Why Meniscal Repair Matters

  • Helps protect the knee joint long-term.

  • Reduces the risk of early arthritis.

  • Maintains better function and shock absorption than removing the tissue.
